Carthage United Methodist Church Wedding Guidelines

We are honored to offer the facilities of Carthage United Methodist Church for your wedding.  The following policies grow out of the desire of our church to live out faithfully its understanding of Christian marriage.
A Christian wedding is to be regarded as a service of worship focused on God rather than a ceremony focused on people.  This understanding should be reflected in all that is done for the wedding.  By choosing this facility, we assume that you understand that this is a place of worship and all involved parties will conduct themselves as such.
  1. Contact church office to have date penciled in on church calendar.
  2. Counseling session with minister.
  3. Schedule a meeting with a member of the Gatekeepers in order to review all rules for using the facility as well as applicable charges, sign the covenant, complete all forms and pay all fees.
  4. Your wedding date will officially be entered on the church calendar after the above steps have been completed.
The decision to perform the ceremony is the right and responsibility of the CUMC Pastor.  The Pastor requests a conference with couples and adequate time must be made available for marriage counseling.  If the couple desires to have a minister other than a CUMC pastor, this will be discussed with the Pastor so that a proper invitation may be extended.
All music must be appropriate for a worship service and approved by the Gatekeepers or pastor.
The Church Sanctuary will seat approximately 200 persons and has an organ and piano.  The Family Life Center is available for receptions or dinners.  See Kitchen Guidelines for use of kitchen.
Seasonal decorations in place in the sanctuary must be left in place.  Flowers and candles should be used with restraint to preserve the theological symbols within the chancel.  THE ALTAR, PULPIT AND CROSSES SHOULD NEVER BE OBSCURED FROM THE CONGREGATION (the candles which represent the Gospel and the Epistle cannot be removed).  Nothing may be placed on the piano or organ. Pulpit chairs, choir chairs and offering plates may be removed but must be returned by 10 p.m. following the ceremony when the building must be vacated.  There is a kneeling bench available for use.
Coverings must be placed under any and all candles.  Candles in candelabras can only be dripless or mechanical.  No open flames are allowed near the windows or pews.   Battery operated candles are acceptable.  No tacks, screws, nails, staples, wire, glue, or scotch tape shall be used to secure any decorations to sanctuary furnishings.  All decorations must be removed immediately following the ceremony with the exception of flowers left for the worship service on Sunday (Please notify the church office and your Gatekeeper  if these are to be left).  No live flower petals may be dropped in the sanctuary; however artificial petals are permitted and must be completely removed after the ceremony. Only bird seed and bubbles are permitted outside the buildings.
Please consult with the pastor regarding photography.  Microphones may not be attached to walls or furnishings.  If the sound system is utilized, the sound technician must be present during the rehearsal and ceremony. (see fees)
Dressing rooms:  A bride’s room is available upstairs.  A groom’s room is available in the basement.  Both areas must be left clean with all trash placed in the dumpster behind the building.  Use of rooms is limited to only those specified on your application.
At least one Gatekeeper must be in attendance at the rehearsal, preparation for ceremony and ceremony.
